  • Strawberries: Use strawberries that are vibrant red and free of blemishes.
  • Mandarin oranges: I like to segment the oranges, but you can also use slices as well.
  • Fresh pineapple chunks: Use ripe pineapple that’s still slightly firm so that it’s easier to cut.
  • Green kiwi: Look for kiwi that’s ripe, but not mushy so that it holds its shape.
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Purple or red grapes
  • Yogurt fruit dip: You can either serve my homemade yogurt fruit dip or substitute vanilla Greek yogurt.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start by grabbing a large round board or platter. Slice off the stems from the strawberries and cut them into quarters. Lay out the sliced strawberries at the top of the tray in a narrow strip, forming a rainbow shape by overlapping them neatly.
  2. Next, prepare the mandarin oranges by cutting off both ends and removing the rind. Slice the oranges into rounds and place them in a row just below the strawberries.
  3. Arrange the diced pineapple in a line below the mandarin orange slices.
  4. Peel the kiwis, slice them into rounds, and then cut each round in half. Place them in a row under the pineapple.
  5. Create a curved row with the blueberries just below the kiwis.
  6. Cut the grapes in half and arrange them in a curved line under the blueberries to mimic the colors of a rainbow.
  7. Make the yogurt fruit dip and divide it into two small bowls. Position each bowl at the bottom edges of the rainbow to resemble clouds. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge until ready to serve.

  • The quantities of fruit provided are rough estimates and will depend on the size of your platter. I used a platter that was about 14 inches in diameter.

The answer really depends on the age of the children. If you’re serving this tray to young children, consider slicing the grapes into quarters lengthwise, slicing the oranges into smaller pieces and halving or smooshing the blueberries. Can you make a rainbow fruit tray ahead of time?

Once you slice fresh fruits, they start to release moisture and soften up. Because of this, I recommend making this fruit tray no earlier than one day before your event. Be sure to wrap it really well with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge to keep it fresh!

What is the best tray for a rainbow fruit board?

There are so many options! It does help to use a large, flat, round tray, but you don’t have to. A large serving plate works well, too. You could even use a large cutting board and simply arc the fruits into a rainbow shape. Feel free to adjust the size of the rainbow to fit whichever board you have on hand.

Storage Guidelines

  • Once sliced, the fruit tray should only sit out at room temperature for 2 hours max. However, you can easily make this rainbow snack tray the day before. Just wrap the tray really well with plastic wrap to keep the fruit really fresh.

  • Make rainbow fruit skewers: Use bamboo or plastic skewers to make rainbow fruit skewers. They’re easy for young kids to hold, and they look great, all lined up on a serving tray!
  • Tweak the clouds: If you want to really play up the rainbow theme, you can either serve the fruit dip in a flower-shaped dish on one side and add a bowl of chocolate coins for a pot of gold on the other. So cute for St. Patrick’s Day!
  • Add extra sweetness: I usually try to keep the sugar content really low in my recipes, but you could certainly make piles of mini marshmallows to resemble the clouds. In this situation, it’s nice to have toothpicks or little skewers for the kids to grab the marshmallows and fruit.
  • Change the fruit: Please don’t feel like you have to use these exact fruits! Use your child’s favorite fruits and incorporate some new ones too! You can easily use watermelon, green grapes, apple slices, pomegranate, raspberries, blackberries, and more. Just make sure you have at least 6 different colors to mimic a rainbow.

Easy Rainbow Fruit Board

Ingredients
 

  • 1 quart container of strawberries, washed
  • 3-4 mandarin oranges
  • 2 cups diced pineapple
  • 3-4 green kiwis, peeled
  • 2 cups fresh blueberries, washed
  • 2 cups purple seedless grapes, washed
  • Yogurt Fruit Dip or sub in vanilla Greek yogurt or other preferred dip

Instructions
 

  • Get out a large circular tray or platter. Remove the stems from the strawberries and slice. At the top of the plate, arrange the strawberries in a narrow strip in the shape of a rainbow, overlapping them to fill in any gaps.
  • Next, cut the bottom and top of each of the mandarin oranges. Slice off the skin so that the flesh of the orange is revealed. Cut each of the oranges into circular slices. Arrange in a row beneath the strip of strawberries.
  • Arrange the diced pineapple in a strip below the mandarin orange slices.
  • Peel the kiwis and cut into circular slices. Cut each circular slice in half and arrange in a strip beneath the diced pineapple.
  • Arrange the blueberries in a curved strip just below the kiwi slices.
  • Cut the grapes in half and arrange in a curved strip below the blueberries to resemble a rainbow.
  • Prepare a batch of the yogurt fruit dip and divide into two small bowls. Place each bowl at the bottom of each side of the fruit rainbow to resemble clouds. Serve or place in the fridge until ready to serve.
